Leadership Development and Self-Awareness: The Impact of the DISC Personality Assessment on Self-Awareness in Ohio Division III Athletic Directors
Joseph Howard
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Adler University
This interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) explored the Dominance Influence Steadiness Conscientiousness (DISC) assessment's reported impact on self-awareness in Ohio National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III (DIII) athletic directors (ADs). Leadership development should be a priority of a leader because it helps ensure the organization has a steady flow of talent ready to impact the organization positively. When leaders develop, they enhance their skillset and approach to leadership challenges to reach new performance heights. The AD has a huge impact on the culture, environment, and ultimate success of the athletic department. The students and staff rely heavily on the AD to make sound decisions. To answer the research question, five ADs completed the DISC assessment, and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. A three-step process was used to analyze the data in accordance with the interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology (Pietkiewicz & Smith, 2014). Analysis of the data uncovered myriad subordinate themes that were further analyzed to develop three superordinate themes: affirms what they already knew about themselves, creates space for objectivity, and self-awareness is embodied with intentional exposure and practice. Of these three superordinate themes, five subordinate themes were noted. The findings reveal the positive impact and value of using the DISC assessment as a tool for self-awareness and professional development. Future researchers should explore the longitudinal impact of the DISC assessment to provide a deeper level of empirical evidence.
