Long Term Follow-up of Vocational Education Graduates: A Study Based on Federal Income Tax Data.
Ghazalah, I. A.
A study used federal income tax data to examine the long-term earning, unemployment, and interregional mobility patterns among 15,055 persons who graduated from 14 Ohio vocational education programs in 1979. Income data on the graduates' income earned during the 1983 tax year were also compared with U.S. Census Bureau data on 1983 Money Income of Persons in the United States after appropriate adjustments were made for United States-Ohio and Ohio regional income differences. The vocational graduates tended to have higher incomes and lower unemployment rates. With respect to graduates remaining in Ohio five years after graduation, agricultural production and horticulture had the highest state retention rate (90.08 percent). The health occupations education program (associate degree) had a slightly lower than average net retention rate for the state as a whole (83.33 compared with 84.57 percent). (This report includes 29 tables that summarize income, unemployment, and geographic mobility data according to Ohio's 5 geographic regions [central, northeast, northwest, southwest, and other] and 14 vocational programs--agricultural production and horticulture, auto mechanics, home economics, carpentry, electronics, machine shop, cosmetology, occupational work experience, distributive education, secondary-level health occupations education, associate degree-level health occupations education, accounting and data processing, general office, and technical education.)
