The majority of variables which have been investigated as potential causes of opposition to busing have not explicitly dealt with attitudes and beliefs about busing and school segregation. The study described in this paper therefore was designed to explore variables dealing with perceived costs and benefits of busing and perceived racial discrimination in the educational system. Data were collected in 218 telephone interviews conducted with adults residing in Akron, Ohio, shortly after the completion of a school desegregation trial but before a court decision had been reached. The study design involved the inclusion of various questions regarding the respondents' attitudes, in order to produce a less skewed distribution (with respect to opposition to busing) than that found in other busing studies. By utilizing several variables, it was found that a smaller proportion of people unalterably opposed busing for desegregation than would be indicated in a survey which only had one question regarding acceptance of or opposition to busing. It was found that the degree of opposition is related to certain perceived costs and benefits of busing and to a preference for neighborhood schools. These attitudes also mediate the greater opposition of whites and of parents with children in white schools. (Author/GC)
