In this article, the author introduces Eusebio Montoya, Smithfield-Selma High School senior and soccer player with his sights set on college, who faces hurdles shared by nearly 2 million undocumented immigrants nationwide. Known as "Sabs," Eusebio Montoya came to Smithfield, North Carolina, as a 4th grader speaking no English. A high school and club sport soccer standout, his collegiate aspirations were threatened by his undocumented status. Moved by the plight of immigrant kids, like Sabs, Chris Embler, Smithfield-Selma High School English teacher, high school soccer coach, and one of a handful of "Triple S" teachers devoted to helping immigrant kids in the rural part of North Carolina, had spent endless hours trying to find a school that would accept Sabs without charging too high a price--a problem not only for Sabs but also for the 1.7 million undocumented immigrant children nationwide who find themselves, at the end of 12 years of free schooling, largely shut out of colleges and universities. With Embler's help, he was still working feverishly to earn a scholarship.
