Understanding the Assignment: The Lived Experiences of Black Girls at a Predominantly White Independent School
Sherry D. Harley
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This study examined the lived experiences of Black girls at a Predominantly White Independent School (PWIS). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight Black, female graduates of Arlington Hall, a private school in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. Transcripts were analyzed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to identify themes. Three major themes emerged: students sought support from trusted adults, students created safe spaces for themselves, and students focused on their post-Arlington endeavors. These findings contribute to the current research on Black girls by centering this traditionally marginalized population's experiences in education.
