A Strategic Redesign of Online ENG 111 Courses: Examining Enhancement Efforts at a Small Community College in Rural North Carolina
Paul S. Mills
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
This research study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of improvement efforts made for ENG 111 online courses at Brunswick Community College (BCC). The primary goal is to enhance student satisfaction, increase course completion rates, and improve course success rates. The study assesses the strategic redesign of ENG 111 courses and aims to determine its impact on student satisfaction, completion, and success. To address the research objectives, one qualitative and two quantitative research questions were formulated. The data collection and analysis methods employed for the study involved an independent samples t-test for the quantitative portion, thematic analysis of interview questions for the qualitative component of the first question, and logistic regression for the second and third quantitative questions. The results of the analysis indicated no statistically significant differences in success rates, completion rates, or success rates before and after the course redesign. However, insights gained from the interviews provided valuable recommendations for online faculty. These recommendations include creating opportunities for student engagement, ensuring availability and accessibility, providing timely feedback, maintaining regular communication, and organizing course materials in a structured manner. While the redesign of ENG 111 courses did not result in statistically significant changes, the qualitative findings highlight important strategies for online faculty to enhance the student experience and improve outcomes in online courses.
