An Examination of the Effectiveness of Equal Opportunity Schools on the Academic Achievement of Minority Students

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Equal Opportunity Schools on high school minority achievement in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. The 48% of students in this research study were identified as minority students, which means they were identified as non-white or African American/Black, Hispanic American, Asian American, or Native American. This study highlighted the tools, life skills and educational mechanisms that allowed these minority students to be successful. The researcher advocates that this study is unique in implementing interventions to enable minority students to thrive and flourish in IB and AP classes. The target population for this study were AP and IB students from the coastal plain in the northeastern part of South Carolina. The study consisted of 9th-12th grade minority students located at the three high schools in this region of South Carolina. The students were selected by utilizing a random sample approach to ensure that the students who were not chosen had the same chances of being selected as those who were selected. This study found significant contributions attributed to the partnerships of Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS). Nine hundred three students consisted of 48% African America, 42% females, 40% White, 14% Hispanic, 13% Asian, and 308 of these students were low-income. All students successfully completed at least three or more IB or AP courses with at least a B average in those courses. This study found that great things occur when people at the school building level work effectively together, combined with the mission and vision of EOS, and a strong relational trust develops among the professionals with parents and with the community.
