Information is presented about education in North Carolina. Data are included in the following areas: (1) population; (2) enrollment and attendance; (3) faculty numbers and salaries; (4) general financial resources; (5) governmental revenue; (6) school revenue; (7) governmental expenditures and debt; (8) school expenditures; and (9) miscellaneous statistics relating to education. Over 100 statistics pertaining to education are presented in two sections: North Carolina's Rank, 1990; and Educational Trends in North Carolina. For some indices, North Carolina showed slight gains over other states, as illustrated in the amount of money spent on higher education. Relative to other states, North Carolina's per capita income was low, and state and local tax revenues and teacher salaries continued to be below the national average. Combined North Carolina per capita state and local expenditures for elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education were below the national average; and North Carolina ranked even lower in expenditures for local elementary and secondary schools.
