Setting Policy for Young Adolescents in the After-School Hours. Proceedings of Conference (Carrboro, North Carolina, November 11-13, 1984).
North Carolina Univ., Chapel Hill. Center for Early Adolescence.
This booklet records a series of conference presentations and group discussions about a growing problem in the United States: the increasing number of young adolescents in the 10- to 15-year age range who do not have adult supervision after school. Participants identified current program initiatives, policy barriers to increasing and improving after-school opportunities in the public and private sectors, and promising policy recommendations at the local, state, and national levels. Topics covered include the following: (1) statistics on studies investigating the extent of lack of adult supervision for adolescents after school, (2) the nature of the risks involved for unsupervised adolescents, (3) youth problems and social issues resulting from the lack of after-school services, and (4) effective youth programs developed by various agencies and organizations around the country.
