An Exploration of the Experiences of Nigerian Adult Learners Utilizing Smartphones and Associated Apps to Access Learning
Casmir Irielle
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
In this study, the researcher explored the experiences of adult learners in Nigerian universities using smartphones and mobile learning applications to access, facilitate, and enhance learning. The study focused on how these technologies impact students' learning, particularly seamless access to numerous learning resources, enjoyment, cost, and challenges. Despite the growing global role of mobile devices in education, their use among Nigerian adult learners remains underexamined. To address this, the researcher posed two questions: (1) How do adult learners describe their experiences using mobile devices as learning tools? (2) How do smartphones and related apps support and improve adult learning? A basic qualitative research design was used, with data collected through virtual interviews with 10 adult learners from a Nigerian university. The population consisted of adult students in Nigerian universities, specifically focusing on those aged 20 years and above. Thematic analysis revealed four main themes: positive experiences, enjoyment, costliness, and challenges. The findings indicated that while smartphones and apps enhance learning and are enjoyed by students, they are also costly and challenging. The study underscores the need for affordable digital devices and better integration of digital literacy in education to improve learning outcomes in developing nations. The findings highlight the importance of providing access to inexpensive digital devices and learning applications for adult learners in Nigerian universities. Addressing the identified challenges can enhance the effectiveness of technology for education, ultimately improving learning outcomes. The researcher recommends that educators and curriculum planners develop relevant mobile learning competencies, incorporate digital literacy into the curriculum, and utilize these digital devices effectively for learning and instructional purposes.
