Gill Rutherford – Cambridge Journal of Education, 2024
The compulsory education of students who have complex learning characteristics has received little attention in New Zealand research literature. This paper explores the positive educational experiences of a student who transferred from one high school to another in the same city, which resulted in him 'actually learning'. Using Appreciative…

Lawrence, Julie; Taylor, Rachael W.; Galland, Barbara; Williams, Sheila; Gray, Andrew; Sayers, Rachel M.; Taylor, Barry – Child Care in Practice, 2019
Objectives: To determine the frequency of 14 discipline strategies used by mothers (n = 564) and fathers (n = 335) in caring for their six-month old infant. Methods: Data on discipline practices were obtained from families participating in an obesity prevention trial (Prevention of Overweight in Infancy). Each parent was asked to indicate the…

Clarke, Dave; Ebbett, Erin – International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction, 2010
Research examining the relationships among Maori cultural identification, drinking behaviour, drinking motivation and mental health is almost non-existent. A review of literature suggests that stronger Maori identification could be associated with lower alcohol consumption on a typical occasion, less frequent drinking, drinking to enhance mood or…

Minster, Sara Tepaeru; Elliffe, Douglas; Muthukumaraswamy, Suresh D. – Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2011
We aimed to investigate whether novel stimulus relations would emerge from stimulus correlations when those relations explicitly conflicted with reinforced relations. In a symbolic matching-to-sample task using kanji characters as stimuli, we arranged class-specific incorrect comparison stimuli in each of three classes. After presenting either Ax…

Lie, Celia; Alsop, Brent – Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2010
The present experiment examined the effects of varying stimulus disparity and relative punisher frequencies on signal detection by humans. Participants were placed into one of two groups. Group 3 participants were presented with 1:3 and 3:1 punisher frequency ratios, while Group 11 participants were presented with 1:11 and 11:1 punisher frequency…

Moffat, Thecla Kudakwashe – Kairaranga, 2011
A single subject design was used to investigate the effectiveness of an increase in teacher behaviour-specific praise statements to address anti-social behaviours demonstrated by a student who displays aggressive behaviours. Researchers agree that praise is effective in improving problem behaviours. They also agree that training teachers to use…

Navakatikyan, Michael A.; Davison, Michael – Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2010
Dynamical models based on three steady-state equations for the law of effect were constructed under the assumption that behavior changes in proportion to the difference between current behavior and the equilibrium implied by current reinforcer rates. A comparison of dynamical models showed that a model based on Navakatikyan's (2007) two-component…

Johansen, Anita; Little, Steven G.; Akin-Little, Angeleque – Kairaranga, 2011
The way in which behaviour is perceived and managed by teachers can influence the classroom environment. The current study examined teachers' perceptions of the cause of school behavioural problems and the effectiveness of positive behavioural interventions. It also examined the level of formal training participants have received in behaviour…

Wearmouth, Janice; Mckinney, Rawiri; Glynn, Ted – Educational Research, 2007
Background: Many responses to students whose behaviour is considered unacceptable at school fail because they treat young people as isolated individuals and do not operate in the context of the community of people who know and care about them. In some parts of the world there is a move towards exploring how to support such students by moving away…

Townsend, Michael A. R.; Moore, Dennis W.; Tuck, Bryan F.; Wilton, Keri M. – Educational Psychology: An International Journal of Experimental Educational Psychology, 1998
Assesses students in a statistics laboratory of an educational psychology course for mathematics self-concept and mathematics anxiety at the beginning and end of the course. Finds that self-concept improves in a positive learning environment but that anxiety does not decrease. Reports that attitudinal factors are mediated by prior experience in…

Evans, Ian M.; Meyer, Luanna H. – Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability, 1999
A naturalistic behavioral assessment and intervention program over a 3-year period for a New Zealand girl (age 5) with Rett syndrome is described. The most significant reduction in hand mannerisms and other excess behaviors was related to positive social interactions and play that allowed for communication at the affective level. (Author/CR)

Alexander, Gerald; Beale, Ivan L. – Australia and New Zealand Journal of Developmental Disabilities, 1990
An intellectually handicapped man was studied in a workshop where he was employed to "detip" ear tags. Productive behavior was reinforced on either a variable ratio (VR) schedule or a variable duration (VD) schedule. Results indicated lower time on task and higher detipping rates under the VR schedule. (Author/PB)
