Elementary school students who were recent immigrants from Puerto Rico, Haiti, Greece, Italy, Hong Kong and Israel participated in this after school program. The goal of the program was to increase student proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. Ninety-seven students from two elementary schools were selected on the basis of counselor or teacher recommendation. Non-English speaking applicants were given priority for acceptance into the program. The program provided for tutoring by high school seniors, verbal and written exercises and games and study materials developed for the students. Achievement tests in reading were administered to the students on a pre and post test basis. Personal data forms and questionnaires were administered to tutors, students, and parents. The results of this program evaluation shows that students improved skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. No differences were found between pre and post test scores for tutors.
