Human Service Institutes. An Alternative for Professional Higher Education.
Cohen, Audrey C.
After noting the deficiencies of the predominant system of traditional higher education and the growing need for professionals in the human services fields, the author proposes the Human Service Institute as an alternative model for professional higher education. The model is based upon the College for Human Services in New York City. The objective of the model is rapidly to develop professionals in the human services committed to working for social change. Some of the features of the model are: (1) its work study curriculum with a bachelor's degree awarded after two years with the emphasis placed on involvement in social change as the moral equivalent of research; and (2) an evaluation and certification process based on the student's ability to demonstrate through job performance his capacity to make an effective contribution to the human services through an integration of knowledge and skills in the field. The role of the faculty is also discussed. Appended is a model for some alternative routes in legal education. (DM)
