The After-School Corporation (TASC) follows the national discussion on expanded learning initiatives with much interest. TASC believes that by increasing the amount of time that students spend in school, students can participate in diverse activities that go beyond the structured school curricula that characterize many of the schools nationwide. TASC's expanded learning strategy is to re-engineer schools to meet the range of student needs by adding more learning time to the school day, while supporting families, communities, and schools working collaboratively. This chapter lays out the research basis for TASC's approach to expanded learning time and opportunities (ELTO), a description of TASC's model and how it is being implemented in New York City, and a discussion of how TASC is measuring its success.
