Founded in 1966, Young Women's Leadership School is a public girls' school in New York City that serves grades 7-12. The school's philosophy--"to nurture the intellectual curiosity and creativity of its students and address the unique developmental needs of young women"--is put into practice on a daily basis. The girls wear uniforms, work cooperatively in groups, and assume leadership roles. The structure supports high expectations. The young women know that they are expected to work hard, but understand that their teachers will support them in every way. The school's objective is to prepare every student for college and a professional career. Every activity and every school event is targeted to meet this objective--beginning with seventh-grade orientation and culminating with students receiving significant scholarship support at graduation. For example, the teacher-adviser program supports social-emotional development while the block-scheduled humanities and science courses nurture intellectual development and the activity program provides leadership experiences.
