The New York State School Library Systems were established in 1984 for the purpose of providing professional development, consulting about library programs and practice, coordinating cooperative collection development, facilitating interlibrary loans, and supporting regional and state-sponsored electronic resources. There are currently forty school library systems serving more than 3.2 million students, teachers, and administrators in more than 4,200 public and nonpublic schools across New York state. Each system, be it in a city, suburb, rural area, or a mix of those area types, is able to respond to the unique needs of its region, which are shaped by geographic, economic, and cultural factors.
