Learning Standards for Languages Other Than English. Revised Edition.
New York State Education Dept., Albany.
New York's state standards for student achievement in second language learning, for languages other than English, are outlined in the areas of both communication skills and cultural awareness, at three proficiency levels. The first standard is that "students will be able to use a language other than English for communication." The second is that "students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings." Each is further defined for these languages or language groups: modern languages; Latin; American Sign Language; and Native American languages. Within each category and for each level, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are specified in behavioral objectives, with examples given of appropriate activities and subskills. In addition, samples of student written work in French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish are included to illustrate the skill levels targeted. (MSE)
