Community Support of Their Schools in Western New York State, 1969 and 1977.
Burke, William J.; Milstein, Mike M.
This research addressed the contemporary problem of declining support for school funding requests. The study examined current factors and factors over time (1969-77) that underlie school tax balloting. Data were collected from four previously studied districts and statistically analyzed. Voters' attitudes toward school community relations, educational program means, and fiscal credibility along with individuals' parental status, age, income, and education were shown to relate to school tax voting over time. Fiscal credibility was the salient predictor. The paper concludes that school officials who identify and selectively recruit supportive voters, who manage community confidence, and who reflect fiscal credibility will optimize referendum success. Future longitudinal research is relevant and feasible. (Author)
