The purpose of this qualitative research study is to identify role changes that mid- level management (directors) experienced due to COVID-19. The research aims to identify these role changes, the impact of those role changes on the participants, and how they balanced their roles at work and at home. Fourteen directors at private colleges in New Jersey were each interviewed virtually on Google Meet for 30 minutes or more during a three- month period (May 2022 - August 2022). Participants were asked for background information and were then asked a series of ten interview questions designed by the researcher to specifically answer the research questions. A thematic analysis was conducted from the participants' responses, and overall themes were determined. In regard to role changes, the participants responded that there were in fact several role changes onset by COVID-19. In regard to the impact of the role changes, respondents reported that they were impacted negatively, and some made changes to their personality and management styles to cope. In regard to balance between work and home roles, the respondents reported that it was impossible to have any kind of balance because they were constantly overloaded with work that they were forced to bring home. The data was then analyzed using the Stress As a Response Model by Hans Seyle, which shows that COVID-19 is a life event that created role changes, identified also as a life event that created stress for the participants. The participants feeling the impact of these role changes used stress mediators such as social support to overcome the stress. The stress responses to the mediators also known as the physical and psychological experiences of the participants showed that some were not able to overcome the stress, which led to health problems or disease. These findings indicate a need for colleges to implement successful stress mediators such as gym memberships, grief counseling, and set business hours. The colleges must also provide updated operation manuals, new technology, and defined roles specifically to limit the initial onset of stress that the directors experience.
