The research study reviewed the high impact contextualized support English Second Language (ESL) Speech Health Profession (HP) course and how it affected the student's progress into the health professions at Bergen Community College (BCC). The pilot course offered at BCC during three semesters, Fall 2016, Spring 2017 and Fall 2017 introduced health program concepts to empower students with early exposure to improve United States medical cultural understanding and communication skills. An ESL professor and a nursing professor developed a pilot course to help ESL student progression into health professions. At BCC the ESL student's pathway to enter the health professions has never been studied. A mixed study was conducted and included both qualitative interviews and quantitative data focusing on the BCC ESL participant's progression. The researcher compared Group A Speech 100 Health Profession (HP) course ESL participants to Group B Speech 100 Control Group ESL participants. The qualitative interviews provided insight into the participant's engagement and progress accounts into health profession areas. Specifically, the participants perceived the course as beneficial to their success. However, the researcher found the Group A HP Course participants failed to garner success when applying to the health profession programs due to inferior English language acquisition skills when compared to the control group. In addition to the lack of Group A HP participants English proficiency, their GPA's were lower than the control group. Curriculum changes were suggested to engage the ESL student learning behaviors within the course. Further research are required to evaluate the continued progression of the ESL student in the Health Professions programs and their outcomes.
