The intention of this manual is to inform school board members of the duties and responsibilities incurred with their election or appointment to a board of education. Specific reference is made to New Jersey; however, the general admonitions are applicable to board members from other states. Information and guidelines deal with the structure of the local board, board meetings, and the organization of the New Jersey School Boards Association. Responsibilities and limitations of board members are discussed in chapters that concern the board and staff, the curriculum, student rights, budgets, buildings and maintenance, labor relations, and public relations.
