This manual was designed to assist Minnesota's schools in minimizing the consumption of lead in drinking water by students and staff. It offers step-by-step instructions for testing and reducing lead in drinking water. The manual answers: Why is lead a health concern? How are children exposed to lead? Why is lead a special concern for schools? How does lead get into drinking water? How much lead in drinking water is too much? and What can be done to reduce lead levels in drinking water? This last question includes discussion of legal background and requirements, testing for lead in school drinking water, flushing taps, testing taps, flushing and retesting, other corrective actions, and reassessment.
