Cooperative Project in American Indian Development. Product Evaluation Report, Title IV, Part A, 1978-79.
Claus, Richard N.; And Others
During 1978-79, the third year of the three-district Cooperative Project in American Indian Development, three of six objectives were met and three partially fulfilled. On a $58,425 budget, planners successfully increased Indian parents' involvement in the project and conducted two pilot studies. The first, to research the dropout rate of Saginaw American Indians, revealed that 2.94% of American Indian secondary students dropped out, compared with 7.46% overall. The second study, to evaluate the performance of Saginaw Indian students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program indicated superior achievement in the early grades, but slight inferiority in grade 10, compared to all students tested. Project planners also successfully conducted 11 Indian Cultural Enrichment sessions for 71 students. Although this represented an increase of 20 over the last year, fewer new students than expected were involved. Objectives concerning improvement and finalization of three Indian curriculum packages were partially met. The grade 6-8 curriculum was not completely updated, but the quality of the finalized K-2 and 3-5 packages was improved. Two planned related inservice sessions were held, but with unfinalized materials. Evaluators recommended closer supervision of home liaison activities and improved cultural enrichment activities.
