Achieve Boston: A Citywide Innovation in Professional Development

New Directions for Youth Development, n104 p39-50 Win 2004
Several years ago intermediaries in Boston were challenged to build a continuum of training around a shared set of competencies for those who work with young people ages five to twenty-two during the out-of-school-time hours. After receiving a few small planning grants, local intermediaries teamed up with large youth-serving organizations to develop a process for determining the needs of the workforce, identifying professional development resources, and connecting practitioners. The new team was named Achieve Boston. An initial review of the research confirmed what these partners already knew: that the out-of-school-time workforce faced myriad challenges, including low wages, few or no benefits, and limited opportunities for professional development. Few organizations could provide access to outside professional development for their staff because of time and fiscal constraints; furthermore, information about training was not easily accessible and the training that was available did not for the most part lead to long-term program improvement or individual career advancement. This article describes Achieve Boston's achievements to date and the key elements of its success. (Contains 4 notes.)
