Teaching Students Not Subjects: Examining Induction and Inclusion Practices in Vocational-Technical Education
Margaret Dutch
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Easily accessible, asynchronous professional learning can support new career technical educators' instructional skill development from their 1st day of employment. This two-cycle action research inquiry aimed to improve special education student engagement in the licensed trades curriculum by exploring the connection between teacher induction practices, engagement strategies practiced in licensed trades programs, and teachers' understanding of inclusive education. The Cycle 1 study participants included 10 educators from six licensed trade programs in a small regional career technical school in Massachusetts. Their perspective on teaching students with learning differences led to action steps that promoted an asynchronous professional learning option for new and emerging career technical teachers. The Cycle 2 action step included developing a website to complement the Massachusetts Career Technical Educator licensure requirements and the "Massachusetts Guidebook for Inclusive Practices." The implementation of the action step included sharing the newly launched website with study participants and stakeholders. Ten semistructured interviews were conducted to gather data about the website's impact on new and emerging career technical educators. Data analysis included coding, analytic memos, and creating a graphic representation of the data. The study concluded that asynchronous professional learning could positively support new and emerging career technical teachers. Implications for the organization include teacher access to the Teacher Toolbox, https://fillingyourtoolbox.com/, a professional learning tool tailored to meet the needs of new and emerging career technical educators. The website provides asynchronous options and school-based support, including access to information, mentoring, coaching, and targeted professional learning.
