The Dilemma of the English Department Head: A Report on the Survey of the Role and Responsibilities of the Heads of English Departments in Massachusetts Secondary Schools.
O'Brien, Marjorie M.
Junior and senior high school English department heads in Massachusetts were surveyed as part of a project to provide a clearer picture of the extent and diversity of the department head's role and responsibilities, to offer recommendations to make the job more manageable and satisfying, and to provoke discussion and positive action. Separate sections of this report discuss the dilemma of department heads, caught between what they feel should be the priorities of their position and the realities of their situation; findings of the survey; profiles of heads of small, medium-sized, and large departments; regional variances; and recommendations by the Massachusetts Council of Teachers of English. Appendixes summarize responses to selected questions, report on implementation of 18 recommendations from the Conference of Secondary School English Department Chairpersons, and provide a selected bibliography for English department heads.
