Getting Ourselves Together
Cohen, Monroe
Childhood Education, v82 n5 p263 Ann 2006
In this article, the author presents five valuable lessons on how an overseas educational consultant relates to concerns about preparing teachers to work in inner-city ghetto schools. The first lesson is learning to communicate and commune with another culture. Second, is seeing educational problems in a broadened social context. Third, is appreciating how paraprofessionals play a valuable role in making possible greater educational achievement. Fourth, is observing how concern about the irrelevance of curricula and teaching materials can lead to fresh indigenous approaches, capitalizing on the strengths of children rather than despairing over their deficiencies. Lastly, the most significant of those lessons mentioned, is building trust in a world of alienation.
