Opening Fall Enrollment, 2002.
Filipp, Laura
This report presents fall 2002 enrollment figures for Maryland colleges and universities in tabular form. In 2002, total headcount enrollment at Maryland's colleges and universities rose by 3.9%, or 11,085 students, to 298,776. This was the highest enrollment in the state's history, and the increase in the past 2 years was the biggest since the 1974-1975 school year. In the past 20 years, total enrollment in Maryland has grown by 27.7%, with enrollments rising for 6 straight years. Community colleges were responsible for 47.7% of the statewide increase. Public four-year colleges and universities, which increased enrollment by 3.2%, accounted for 36.9% of the statewide growth. Independent colleges and universities, which increased enrollment by 3.3%, represented 15.3% of the growth. Most of the enrollment increase was attributable to a 4.8% rise in the number of full-time undergraduates. Part-time undergraduate enrollment increased by 2.2% in the past year, with community colleges representing all of the growth. Full- and part-time graduate and professional enrollments were the highest on record in 2002. In that year, women continued to outnumber men, making up 59% of all students. (SLD)
