A Promising Approach to Addressing America's Biggest Challenges. Needle-Moving Community Collaboratives

Communities face powerful challenges--a high-school dropout epidemic, youth unemployment, teen pregnancy--that require powerful solutions. In a climate of increasingly constrained resources, those solutions must help communities to achieve more with less. A new kind of community collaborative--an approach that aspires to significant, community-wide progress by enlisting all sectors to work together toward a common goal--offers enormous promise to bring about broader, more lasting change across the nation. The White House Council for Community Solutions, created in December 2010, worked with the Bridgespan Group to: (1) identify the most effective needle-moving collaboratives; (2) understand the keys to success; and (3) recommend ways the Council could help encourage more collective action, particularly in addressing the challenges of disconnected youth. This report presents their findings and also includes the appendix: A Long History of Community Revitalization Efforts in the United States.
