Multitasking Is Multitaxing: Why Special Educators Are Leaving the Field
Kaff, Marilyn S.
Preventing School Failure, v48 n2 p10-17 Win 2004
The purpose of the study was to provide insight into the inability to retain qualified special education teachers. Why do special educators say they want to leave? What conditions would encourage them to stay? Nearly half of the teachers reported they planned to leave the field in the next 5 years. They cited three areas of concern: administrative support for special education, classroom concerns, and individual issues. Rather than expecting special educators to be a "Jill or Jack of all trades," it is time for refocusing preparation of special educators to more accurately reflect the differentiated roles for special education teachers.
