Remedial/Developmental Education in Kansas Community Colleges, Summer 1987-Spring 1988.
Emmons, Joseph
In October 1986, the Kansas State Board of Education included basic skills education as part of the role, scope and mission statements of the state's community colleges. In 1988, a study was conducted to assess the status of postsecondary remedial/developmental education. Study findings, based on semester enrollment figures for fall 1987, included the following: (1) 42% of the remedial students had not declared programs of study; (2) remedial/developmental math courses made up 45% of the total remedial headcount enrollment and 53% of the total credit hours; (3) completion rates for remedial courses ranged, by college, from a low of 51% to a high of 93%, for a statewide average of 79%; (4) remedial enrollments comprised 3.72% of total credit hour enrollments statewide; (5) the state paid a total of $23,324,042 in credit hour aid to the colleges, including $737,678 for remedial courses; (6) minorities constituted 26.9% of the unduplicated headcount enrollment in remedial courses and an estimated 9% in all courses; (7) students over 21 years of age made up 44.46% of the total headcount in remedial courses; and (8) beginning in fall 1988, all 19 Kansas community colleges offered remedial/developmental courses. The bulk of the report consists of tables showing fall 1987 data by college. A table showing remedial/developmental courses by college for the spring 1985-spring 1988 period is also provided. (AYC)
