Social Studies Course Offerings in Midwestern High Schools.
Guenther, John; Hansen, Patricia
The report has two purposes: (1) to describe the current status of high school courses in four midwestern states, and (2) to describe in specific terms the status of social studies programs in those states. For both studies, 265 schools in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska were grouped by enrollment figures into five classifications ranging from 111 students to 1364 students. Section one reviews the scope of traditional-length courses in ten subject areas and the frequency of minicourse offerings in each subject area. It was found that larger schools offer more courses and have a wider variety. The smallest percentage of semester-length courses was in math, science, and foreign languages. Most minicourses were in language arts and social studies. Section two identifies the frequency of traditional-length and minicourse offerings in social studies, and presents various course titles used in social studies subject areas. It was found that social studies represented 12% of all traditional-length course offerings; smaller schools had more traditional social studies course content; and minicourses most often focused on American history, government, and world history. Tables of response data and lists of course titles are included. (AV)
