Teachers' (n=78) and students' (n=2,347) perceptions of actual and preferred classroom environments were compared in 78 sixth grade classes in 43 schools in Israel. Gender differences in omitting items and guessing on multiple-choice tests were studied in Israel for 302 male and 302 female ninth graders and 150 male and 150 female university applicants. The performance of 254 Israeli twelfth graders on multiple-choice tests with positive or negative item stems was studied. For items requiring low cognitive reasoning, performance does not differ, but, for items requiring high cognitive reasoning, the negative mode is more difficult.
