Iowa Career Exploration Institute.
Timmerman, L. D.
The Iowa Career Exploration Institute was designed to plan for implementation of career education at the junior high or middle school level. Fourteen planning teams were selected from different size schools and geographical areas of Iowa. The teams consisted of administrators, counselors, and classroom teachers. The first three days of meetings were designed for participants to learn firsthand regarding the "best" career education projects from Iowa and the nation. Several later meetings involved a sharing of ideas and reports from each team. In addition, a helping session was given by the Iowa Department of Public Instruction staff in relation to preparing proposals. At the final meeting of the institute each team submitted plans for implementing career education in its schools. (The fourteen approaches are included in this document.) All participants were asked to rate the strengths and weaknesses of the Institute. Most of the participants listed the sharing of experiences, the educational displays, and the first three days of the Institute as being the most important aspects of the Institute. There was a strong belief that a follow-up conference in the early fall and some additional sharing of ideas should take place. (Narratives of various presentations made during the general meetings are also included in this document.) (BM)
