Richards, K. Andrew R.; Wilson, Wesley J.; Eubank, Lori
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v83 n7 p32-38, 45 Sep 2012
Service-learning has become a popular method for connecting the theory taught in undergraduate methods courses with real-world practice in the field while also promoting volunteerism. It exposes undergraduates to relevant learning experiences and provides them with an opportunity to apply their skills in the service of others who are in need. One population that can benefit from service-learning is children with disabilities. This article describes the design, implementation, and assessment of a service-learning program to benefit children with disabilities that is coordinated as a prong of an adapted physical education course. In presenting the program, the benefits to children with disabilities and college students will be discussed along with associated challenges.
