Full-Time Student, Part-Time Police Officer Program
Rhodes, David
Campus Law Enforcement Journal, v41 n1 p24-27, 29 Jan-Feb 2011
Indiana University (IU) is a leading research university located in Bloomington, Indiana. Considered one of the top 100 universities in the world, IU has over 110 academic programs ranked in the top 20 nationwide in such diverse areas as medicine, law, business, education, the arts and sciences. But one program that is little known is the Indiana University Police Department Academy, a training program--perhaps the only such program in the United States--that has full-time students attending a police academy to become sworn police officers. The academy now boasts over 1,000 graduates. Student officers gain law enforcement experience by working part time for the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD). When they graduate from IU, they are certified police officers in the state of Indiana, have a college degree and have law enforcement work experience. (Contains 13 notes.)
