Twenty-First Century Learning in School Systems: The Case of the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, Indianapolis, Indiana
Capuano, Marcia; Knoderer, Troy
New Directions for Youth Development, n110 p113-125 Sum 2006
In November 2000, the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis, Indiana, issued a request for grant proposals from public school districts in Marion County, Indiana. It called for school districts to develop innovative, systemic, and transforming approaches to preparing students to thrive in an increasingly competitive, high-tech, global society. The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township's (MSDLT) response was a $5.9 million dollar request to launch the Digital Age Literacy Initiative. Through the work of the Digital Age Literacy Initiative, MSDLT has developed and implemented the body of knowledge and the twenty-first century skills necessary for students to succeed as self-directed learners in the digital age. This article describes the implementation and outcomes of this initiative. (Contains 1 table, 4 figures, and 5 endnotes.)
