Montessori in India: Her Legacy through Those Who Knew Her
Van Groenou, Meher
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v33 n2 p40-47 Sum 2020
Maria Montessori arrived in India in 1939 to conduct the first training course on the Asian continent. Thus began Montessori's extended stay in India. She wrote and published "The Absorbent Mind," crystallized the Elementary curriculum, and developed the theory of "Planes of Development" as the basis for the curriculum from infancy to adulthood. In this article, Meher Van Groenou was interested not so much in factual data, but more in the real experiences of people who saw, met, and took care of Maria and Mario Montessori, as well as those who had participated in the first teacher training course that Maria Montessori gave in India. One thing led to another, and she made another trip to India the following year, in which she visited various cities to meet with people who had had personal contact with the Montessoris. Since then, she has gone to India many more times, always seeking out new contacts or revisiting folks she had met on previous trips. This quest has taken her to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Chennai.
