An Assessment of the Impact of Time Management Training on Student Success in a Time-Intensive Course
Goodwin, M. M.; Califf, M. E.
Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, v18 n1 p19-41 2007
Workload has been found to be a major course-related factor that affects student dropout rates. A heavy workload combined with a lack of time can create problems for students with courses that, by their very nature, require extensive work outside of class time. One such course is the second-semester programming course at Illinois State University (commonly referred to as CS2). The course deals with concepts that many students find challenging, including complex logic and high levels of technical detail. As instructors of this course, the authors found it to have a high attrition rate and a low success rate, with only 55% of students who were enrolled on 10th class day actually passing with a "C" or better. The authors recognized that students who seemed to have the ability to succeed were not actually succeeding in the course and speculated that one of the issues might be time. In this article, the authors report on research into the effects of time management training on student success in a second-semester computer programming course, a time-intensive course with a relatively low student success rate. Results indicate that time management training can improve the student success rate. (Contains 9 tables and 2 figures.)
