Half a Life Painting Walls: The Trajectory of Graffiti Artist Miguel "Kane One" Aguilar
Aguilar, Miguel
Art Education, v66 n5 p34-38 Sep 2013
In this article, Miguel Aguilar describes the process of mental preparation he performs before beginning a new graffiti mural. This may include reviewing recent sketches and his lists of color palettes. Aguilar mind maps ideas he wants to connect, thinking about intentions or the goal he wants to accomplish. Aguilar further states "this mental stamina was developed to conceptualize ideas and record revisions while completing other, everyday tasks." Aguilar photographs his works via his cellular phone, using this as reference of his talent, and began getting requests from other artist and property owners to paint on "permission walls." Whenever a graffiti artist obtained permission from a property owner, the artist inherently become the curator for who else would paint there and how often installations rotated on that wall. In 2009, Aguilar was accepted into the Master's of Art in Teaching program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), to learn how to teach graffiti in Chicago Public Schools. Now, as an educator, Aguilar continues to learn from his students about how they see graffiti and street art from a holistic perspective. It is a great way to spend time talking about art--both with his students and his own children. Aguilar concludes that by doing this, he is giving them insight into his processes as a working framework for how to navigate other parts of their daily lives.
