Executive Coaching Strategies that Contribute to Superintendent Leadership Development: An Exploratory Study
Christopher Scott Grode
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how executive coaches describe the strategies used with their public-school superintendent clients. The theoretical foundation of Positive Psychology, specifically PERMA+4, framed the questioning and brought context to the executive coach's decisions. The lack of research from the coach's perspective precipitated its exploration to expand the literature. There was one research question within this study: how do executive coaches describe the strategies used with their public-school superintendent clients? Convenience and limited snowball sampling were used to select 11 executive coaches working for the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA). Data were gathered through individual semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Reflexive Thematic Analysis was used to analyze the collected data. Eight themes were identified including: Communication, Guidance, Internals, Outcomes, Preparation, Procedural, Relational, and Support. These themes interactions were articulated to describe the strategies used by executive coaches working with public-school superintendents. Through these descriptive results, the researcher expanded upon the knowledge of coaching specifically from the executive coach's perspective.
