Learning Gets Personal: The Effect of the ScootPad Digital Learning Platform on Identified Tier 2 Middle School Students in a Chicago Suburb
Ferrell, Laura
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
Learning for all students is the most fundamental and noble quest of American public schools. As new educational research presents best practice, this seemingly simplistic goal has become a multifaceted and complicated challenge for school districts. Classroom hierarchies based solely on grade point average are disappearing, replaced by an elemental belief that all students can achieve targets set before them. This shift in pedagogy required supports and structures interwoven into our current school system that identify and respond to students whose academic understanding is below that of their peers. School and district administrators must critically evaluate digital tools that will provide maximum benefit for their populations. With a host of technology tools available, this study seeks to find the effectiveness of the ScootPad adaptive learning platform on the performance of 6th and 8th grade students as measured by the NWEA MAP test. This quasi-experimental study sought to determine what subset of low-achieving students collected the most benefit from this learning platform. The findings of the study in general support the utility of platforms such a ScootPad for enhancing pupil progress, however, much more research needs to be done.
