This study was conducted to investigate the attrition rate among foreign language teachers, attrition being the major component in determining the annual demand for new teachers. The study extended the teacher attrition knowledge base by analyzing data from the state of Illinois' teacher workforce data base, the Teacher Service Record (TSR), which includes reasons regarding termination or leaves of absence. Data were analyzed over a period of 6 years focusing on foreign language teachers (N=982) who left downstate Illinois' (excluding Chicago) public schools during the school years between 1984-85 and 1989-90. The study examined reasons for leaving teaching; reasons for termination or leave of absence; attrition by age group; and foreign language teachers who leave and return to teaching as well as others who do not. More precise attrition studies are suggested in order better to understand how qualified foreign language teachers can be retained. (Five tables/graphs are included.) (LL)
