This guide is intended for job developers, counselors, and other staff who interact with employers to locate jobs for their clients. The guide was written specifically for individuals working with Indochinese refugees, but may be useful to practitioners working to place any limited-English-speaking or otherwise hard-to-place population. The procedures suggested in the guide are treated under three headings: job development, job placement, and follow-up. Under job development, sections address the following issues: using promotional materials and methods, using a job bank, acquiring job information, contacting employers, making initial telephone contact, making the initial employer visit, conducting the employer presentation, handling objections or questions, handling how many employers to visit, touring the employment facility, knowing your clients, and making contact with employer and employer-related groups. Under job placement, sections focus on the following: orienting the client to the program, assessing clients for employment readiness, recording and using job order information, conducting a pre-placement client briefing during and after the job interview, and developing follow-up guidelines. The primary job placement follow-up issue addressed is determining when an employer relationship is deteriorating. A variety of sample forms are provided, including letters of introduction, a letter of client introduction, client contract, language skill level scale, job sample order form, follow-up assessment, follow-up thank you letter, and letter of appreciation.
