This report describes a qualitative research study of an Ounce of Prevention Fund (OPF) teenage parent home visiting program located in an Illinois county with a population of 125,000. The sample consisted of 28 present and former program participants, most of whom had never been married, ages 15 to 24. Sixty percent had one child; the remainder had from two to four children. Two standard open-ended interviews were used; the first for all participants and the second, an in-depth interview of nine women. The study analyzed and evaluated the relationship between the home visitor and the participants, as well as the various types of services provided, in relation to their effect on the individual's life goals and the program's goals. Research questions addressed: (1) participants' expectations about the services; (2) services actually received; (3) perceptions of the home visitor and their relationship with her; (4) participants' goals in education, employment, and family planning; (5) effect of interaction with the home visitor on these goals; and (6) level of support these young women found in their natural environment. Results indicated that after initial anxiety, most participants came to consider the home visitor a good and helpful friend who provided active listening, teaching, support, and advocacy and referral.
