Illinois Literary Reflections of the Bicentennial Year: What Reading Does for People.
Miller, Beverly; Pollard, Frances M.
For this study of specific values that adult readers derive from their reading, 100 people from eastern central Illinois were interviewed about their reading experiences. All persons selected for interview were identified as having a continuing interest in reading, reflected in regular voluntary reading. The interviews were analyzed for information about initial reading experiences, dominant themes pursued by respondents in their reading, specific subject interests, recall of authors and titles that had made significant impressions, the specific qualities that appealed in the reading materials of respondents' choice, changes in reading interests, bases for reading choices, values derived from reading, attitudes toward libraries and library services, importance of reading in respondents' lives, expressions of dislike, and general quotations from the interviews. Data-collection instruments and coding forms are included as appendixes. (AA)
