An advanced course to increase the student's driving ability and knowledge of the automobile is presented in this curriculum guide for use by high school driver education instructors. The course is designed for students who have been driving for 6 to 12 months or who have mastered basic driving skills. Focus is on advanced driving techniques, particularly those for handling emergencies. The guide includes introductory remarks to the instructor regarding program administration (e.g., insurance, cooperation with car dealers, and supervision of students). These are followed by a discussion of facilities, equipment, and vehicles necessary for the course and suggested daily and weekly checklists for driving instructors. The rest of the guide is divided into 12 units. Unit 1 is concerned with vehicle inspection, unit 2 covers predriving habits, the next eight units relate to various exercise maneuvers, unit 11 deals with emergencies due to equipment failure, and unit 12 presents tire information. Each unit contains the following parts: Required entry level, rationale, lesson objective, specific instructional objectives, learning activity, content, and evaluation. The recommended driving range layout for each of the exercises is included in each unit. A separate section at the end presents modifications to the exercise layouts for schools which do not have a large off-street driving range. Three appendixes contain recommended maximum and minimum distances for the maneuvers, suggestions for visual aids, a bibliography, and a media package with diagrams and graphics for use in the instructional units.
