Language Teaching in Hungary. Bulletin.
Lukacs, Judith, Ed.
Three articles discuss aspects of current foreign language instruction in Hungary. "Foreign Languages in Hungarian Schools Today" (Karoly Fulop) surveys the current status of second language instruction, the developments made since reforms were recommended in 1972 and 1979, and possible directions for further development. It looks first at Russian instruction in elementary and secondary schools and then outlines characteristics of second language instruction in general in various school types, including vocational and teacher education programs. Some statistical data are included. "Foreign Language Education in Hungary" (Gyozo Sipoczy) outlines the short- and long-term objectives of the 1979 reforms and describes the current state of instruction at all levels (elementary, secondary, higher, teacher, and adult education). "State Language Examinations in Hungary: A Survey on Levels, Requirements and Methods" (Jeno Bardos) describes the system and instruments for testing language proficiency at three levels. The examinations are administered in common and uncommon languages to anyone over the age of 15 years applying for proficiency certification. The formats, objectives, and topics recommended for study in preparation for the examination are outlined, and the criteria for evaluating performance are summarized for each test type. (MSE)
