Music: Comprehensive Musicianship Program. Grade 6.
Burton, Leon H., Ed.; Thomson, William, Ed.
Forty-nine music lessons for use in sixth grade classes are presented. A number of these lessons feature songs and musical instruments from or about Hawaii, and lessons stress learning about tempos, accents, meters, notes, and rhythm patterns. The lessons introduce the history of instruments such as the ukulele, recorder, rhythm instruments, and resonator bells and include beginning lessons for each. Songs which can be played with these instruments are also included. Concepts of opera, described as a combination of drama, poetry, music, and dancing, are introduced, and the importance of the use of specific voice types to portray individual characters is emphasized. A presentation of the background of the story and the characters in "Amal and the Night Visitors" is used to illustrate important opera concepts. Concluding lessons introduce dance movements, rhythmic patterns, and the playing of Ti Rakau, a game involved in throwing and catching sticks while singing and keeping time to a musical beat. Appendices include fingering charts for the ukulele and the recorder and both a classified subject and an alphabetical index of included songs. Photographs and musical scores are included. (JHP)
