The Molokai Farm Project at Maui Community College grew out of a grant for a Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurship Demonstration Program. The program, which can lead either to an associate degree or to a certification of completion for any number of smaller units of course work, is designed to develop students' managerial proficiency and the technical skills needed to operate a farm successfully. Other activities completed during the project include development of a truck crop program to conduct variety trials and provide a cash flow, implementation of a certified ornamental plants program, design and establishment of a fruit and nut orchard, provision of training to families in the area of operating a family-run agricultural enterprise, and establishment of a training site for program graduates to farm. In addition, project staff have worked in cooperation with the local extension service to foster agriculture on the island of Molokai and have managed to find several marketing outlets for crops produced under the auspices of the project.
